Affair Recovery
Healing after an affair is possible. Therapy walks couples through the critical phases of recovery—taking responsibility, rebuilding trust, and reinforcing lasting connection.
Recovering a relationship that has been damaged by an affair is very possible. Affairs can be emotional and / or sexual. With proper guidance and professional support, couples can experience individual and relationship healing. When an affair is found out, it becomes the visible and obvious problem in the relationship. Yet, there are usually long-standing underlying issues in the relationship that have been ignored and potentially set the stage for infidelity. Affair recovery happens in 3 phases: responsibility, reconnection and reinforcement. Responsibility involves acknowledging the reality of what has taken place without minimizing the behavior or the impact it has had on the relationship. This phase also includes acknowledging the problems that have contributed to the affair. The Reconnection phase involves remorse for the offense, forgiveness of the offense and rebuilding trust. All three of these components must take place for healing to occur. Reinforcement is the implementation of ongoing healthy relationship interactions that strengthen the marriage bond and protect it from future betrayal. The key to success in all 3 phases of recovery is the desire to fix the relationship and the commitment to stick with the process, even when it is difficult.
What to Expect
If it’s your first time pursuing therapy, you may be hesitant to commit to the process. New and unfamiliar experiences often create uncertainty.
However, therapy (commonly referred to as counseling) isn’t new or unusual. Counseling has existed as long as humans have walked the earth. Whether it’s from a friend, relative, mentor or religious figure, people look to fellow human beings for support.
A licensed therapist provides professional, specialized guidance and interventions.
The initial session involves gathering information about current and past struggles. Clients leave the first session with a preliminary action plan and homework exercises (homework is given after all sessions).
The second session involves a review of homework, further assessment of unproductive thinking patterns and education on developing healthy perceptions of self, others and circumstances.
By the third meeting, clients often begin feeling more confident and equipped to address the deeper (root) issues that are fueling unwanted emotions and behaviors. It is recommended that clients complete 3 consecutive weekly sessions to quickly facilitate change and generate hope that things can improve. Sessions will then be scheduled as needed.
